About The Artist

Robriel Wolf

Having had the good fortune to be born at the very beginning of the 1970's, my entire life has been a passionate love affair with color.  It wasn't until I was older that I learned that I also have a unique condition called "synesthesia." Synesthesia is  a neurological condition that occurs whenever one sense is activated and another unrelated sense is activated at the same time. In my case this takes the form of hearing music and simultaneously "seeing" the sound as swirls or patterns of color.

Realizing that other people didn't experience the world in this way was quite the shocking discovery!

Over the course of the pandemic, as an experiment (and as art therapy for myself during that trying time) I decided to try to paint what I see when I see music - which is where my journey began as an abstract artist. I was a figurative artist and children's book illustrator - abstract art was well outside my wheelhouse - but as it happens I fell madly in love with it.

This work is also informed by my "day job" as a mental health therapist and expressive arts therapist. My decision to experiment with painting my mental landscape was greatly informed by a re-reading of Kandinsky's writings about art and his belief that  "music is the ultimate teacher."  I veer deeply Jungian and was trained in a transpersonal psychology program where the exploration of  the inner world and the topography of the subconscious were constantly referenced and emphasized.

In my art, I am attempting to open a window into non-rational consciousness. I invite the viewer to experience and explore states of being and spiritual realms that are antagonistic to words and descriptions, relying instead on what is evoked and what is sensed, felt and intimately known. I seek, as poetry does, to refer the viewer the material that exists between our words, categorizations and distinctions -  drawing them into the richer, more evocative language of our souls.
